Concrete Cost Per Yard: 2026 Ready-Mix Prices
What ready-mix concrete costs per cubic yard in 2026, plus short-load fees, PSI and admixture add-ons, pump truck pricing, and the bags-versus-truck math.

Ready-mix concrete is sold by the cubic yard, but the number on the delivery ticket is rarely the number you quoted yourself. Fees, surcharges, and mix add-ons stack on top of the base price, and on a small pour they can outweigh the concrete. Here is what a yard actually costs in 2026 and everything else that lands on the invoice.
What ready-mix costs per cubic yard in 2026
For standard 3,000 to 4,000 psi residential ready-mix delivered, plan on $140 to $190 per cubic yard, with a national middle near $165. High-cost metros, long-haul rural deliveries, and non-contiguous states run $200 to $280.
That price buys cement, aggregate, sand, water, and the truck. Everything below is separate and appears as its own line:
- Delivery, fuel, or environmental fee: $30–$120 per load
- Short-load surcharge: $40–$75 per yard under the minimum, or a flat $100–$400
- Standby time: typically 5–7 free minutes per yard, then $2.50–$5.00 per minute or $125–$250 per hour
- Saturday or after-hours delivery: $75–$250 per load
- Off-site washout: $25–$75
- Returned concrete disposal: $15–$40 per yard of leftover you send back
Start with volume, because none of the pricing means anything until you know your yardage. Always order about 10 percent over your raw volume. Subgrade is never perfectly flat, forms bow, and running out mid-pour means a cold joint in a slab that should have been monolithic. Ten percent of a five yard order is half a yard, which is cheap. A cold joint is permanent.
Short loads and the minimum-order trap
This is the single biggest surprise on a small pour, and it catches almost everyone the first time.
Ready-mix plants are built around full trucks, usually 8 to 10 cubic yards. Order less and you pay a short-load surcharge because the plant, driver, and truck cost nearly the same whether the drum is full or a quarter full. The math is brutal at the bottom end. A 1.5 yard shed pad might be $250 in concrete and $300 in short-load and delivery fees, so you pay $550 for $250 of material and your effective rate is $365 per yard.
Three ways around it:
- Combine pours. If the patio and the walkway and the shed pad all happen in the same season, do them on one truck. One 6 yard delivery is dramatically cheaper than three 2 yard deliveries.
- Round up to the threshold. If you need 7.5 yards and the minimum for full pricing is 8, order 8. The extra half yard often costs less than the surcharge you avoid, and you can always thicken a section or pour a small pad with the tail end.
- Use a volumetric mini-mix supplier. These trucks carry raw materials and mix on site, so you pay for exactly what you use, typically $180 to $260 per yard with no short-load penalty. For 1 to 4 yards they are frequently the cheapest option and the mix is fresh from the first yard to the last.
Ask two questions of every supplier before ordering: what is the minimum for full pricing, and what is the exact short-load rate below it.
PSI, fiber, and the add-ons on your ticket
Mix design is the other place the per-yard price moves, and most of the adjustments are small enough that skipping them is false economy.

The two lines worth arguing for are 4,000 psi and air entrainment on anything exterior in a freeze-thaw climate. Together they add maybe $15 to $25 a yard, which on a five yard driveway is under $130 total. Concrete that scales and spalls after three winters cannot be repaired attractively, only replaced. That is the trade you are making.
Fiber deserves a clarification because it gets oversold. Microfiber controls early plastic shrinkage cracking. It does not replace welded wire mesh or rebar for structural crack control or load transfer, and no supplier should tell you it does. Anything code-governed or structural should be specified by a licensed engineer working to your locally adopted code.
Pump trucks and when you actually need one
You need a pump when the mixer cannot back within chute range of the pour, which is roughly 15 to 18 feet from the drum with all three chute sections on. Common triggers: a backyard slab behind a fence, a basement floor, an elevated deck or garage, a soft lawn you cannot drive a 60,000 pound truck across, or footings on a slope.
- Line pump (grout pump): $600–$1,200 for a typical residential half day, or $150–$250 per hour with a 3 to 4 hour minimum, plus a $150–$350 setup and washout charge. Handles most residential flatwork and footings.
- Boom pump: $1,000–$2,500 per day, or $200–$400 per hour with a minimum. Needed for reach over a house, high walls, or elevated placements.
- Per-yard pumping charge: some outfits add $12–$25 per yard on top of the hourly minimum.
The alternative is wheelbarrows. One cubic yard is roughly 9 to 14 wheelbarrow loads, so a 5 yard pour is 45 to 70 trips on a clock that does not stop, because the concrete is setting whether you are ready or not. For anything over about 3 yards with no truck access, pay for the pump.
Bags versus ready-mix: the crossover math
Here is the arithmetic people always want and rarely see written down. An 80 pound bag yields about 0.60 cubic feet, so a cubic yard is 45 bags. At $5.50 to $8.50 per bag, that is $250 to $385 per cubic yard in material, plus $60 to $100 a day for a mixer rental if you are not mixing by hand.
Compare that to ready-mix at 1 cubic yard: about $165 for the concrete, $75 delivery, and $250 in short-load surcharge, or roughly $490. Bags win.
At 2 cubic yards: ready-mix runs about $330 plus $75 plus $200, or $605. Bags run 90 bags at around $585 plus mixer. Call it even on cash, and ready-mix wins decisively on labor, consistency, and finish quality, because 90 bags is two people mixing all day and every batch is slightly different.
At 3 cubic yards and up: ready-mix is cheaper outright and the gap widens with every yard.
The practical crossover is about 1 to 1.5 cubic yards. Below that, bags. Above 1.5 yards, order the truck or call a volumetric supplier. Bagged mix also has a quality ceiling that matters on flatwork: hand-mixed batches vary in water content, and water content is what sets final strength.
What common pours cost
Yardage below includes a 10 percent waste allowance. The concrete column is delivered material with typical fees. The installed column is a contractor pouring and finishing it, including base prep, forms, reinforcement, placement, broom finish, and control joints.

Notice what happens to the delivered-concrete column at the small end. The shed pad needs 1.6 yards, about $265 of material at $165 a yard, but lands at $450 to $750 once delivery and the short-load surcharge are on the ticket. That is an effective rate of roughly $280 to $470 per yard. The driveway’s 10.2 yards at $1,600 to $2,300 works out to about $157 to $225 per yard, because the same flat fees spread across six times the volume. Small concrete is expensive concrete on a per-yard basis, which is exactly why combining pours pays.
The finished column behaves differently, and it is worth understanding why. Per square foot, the shed pad and the driveway are not far apart, because finishing labor scales with area rather than with volume. What moves the driveway to the top of the per-foot range is the extra inch of thickness, the reinforcement, and the deeper compacted base a vehicle load requires, not the delivery fee. So on a small pour you are fighting the fees, and on a large pour you are paying for the spec.

Finishing labor is priced separately, per square foot
This is the distinction that makes concrete quotes readable. The concrete is bought by the yard. The work is sold by the square foot, and they are not the same conversation.
Typical labor-only pricing for flatwork, covering excavation, base, forms, reinforcement placement, screeding, floating, and finishing but not the concrete:
- Broom finish: $3.50–$7.00 per square foot
- Smooth or trowel finish, interior: $4.00–$8.00 per square foot
- Exposed aggregate: $6.00–$11.00 per square foot
- Stamped and colored: $8.00–$16.00 per square foot
The concrete itself adds surprisingly little per square foot. At 4 inches thick, one square foot is 0.0123 cubic yards, so at $165 per yard the material is about $2.03 per square foot. At 6 inches it is about $3.05. That is why a finished patio quoted at $10 per square foot is roughly 20 percent concrete and 80 percent everything else, and why shopping ready-mix suppliers to save $10 a yard barely moves a finished job.
How to compare three concrete quotes
Ask each contractor to break out the same six things, then compare:
- Yardage and thickness, and whether the thickness is 4, 5, or 6 inches. A driveway at 4 inches instead of 5 is a 20 percent material cut you will feel later.
- Mix spec: psi, air entrainment, fiber. Get the number, not “standard mix.”
- Base: how many inches of compacted gravel, and whether they are compacting in lifts. This is where cheap bids cut.
- Reinforcement: welded wire, rebar size and spacing, or fiber only, and how it will be supported off the subgrade rather than laid on it.
- Joints: saw-cut or tooled, spacing, and timing. Control joint spacing in feet should be roughly 24 to 30 times the slab thickness in inches.
- Finish, curing method, and sealer, plus who handles excavation, spoils haul-off, and any permit.
Then divide each total by the square footage. Three honest quotes in the same market usually land within 15 to 20 percent. A bid 35 percent below the others has less base, thinner slab, or no reinforcement, and none of those are visible once the concrete is down.
Mistakes that blow the concrete budget
- Ordering short. Coming up half a yard means a second truck at a full short-load surcharge, or a cold joint. Always order 10 percent over.
- Ignoring the minimum. Three separate 2 yard pours across a summer can cost $600 more in surcharges than one 6 yard delivery.
- Not having enough hands. Concrete sets on its own schedule. Six yards placed by two people is how slabs end up with cold joints and a bad finish. Line up help or line up a crew.
- Skipping air entrainment in a freeze-thaw climate. A $25 savings that costs a slab.
- Underbuilding the base. Four to six inches of compacted gravel is what keeps a slab flat. Pouring on soft or uncompacted fill guarantees settlement cracks.
- Reinforcement lying on the ground. Wire or rebar sitting on the subgrade does nothing. It must be chaired up into the slab.
- Blowing the standby window. Trucks include limited unloading time. Forms not ready when the truck arrives can add $125 to $250 an hour.
- Pouring in the wrong weather. Below about 40°F you are buying accelerator, hot water, and blankets. Above about 90°F you are fighting flash set. Both add cost and risk.
- No sealer on decorative work. Stamped and colored concrete needs periodic resealing at $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot, and a homeowner who never budgeted for it watches the color go.
