Usable coverage is less than the printed roll area once you account for trimming.

Patterned papers need 15–20% extra for repeat matching.

How it's calculated

No black boxes — here is the exact math behind your estimate, so you can check it or adapt it for your own quote.

  1. 1Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height
  2. 2Openings = windows × 15 + doors × 21
  3. 3Wallpaperable area = wall area − openings
  4. 4Rolls = ⌈ (wallpaperable area × (1 + waste% ÷ 100)) ÷ usable roll coverage ⌉

Worked example

A 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls, 2 windows, 1 door, using single rolls.

Wallpaper cost by state

The calculator does the quantity math exactly. What it can't know is what a fair unit price looks like where you live — wallpaper runs 61% more in the priciest US market than the cheapest.

Wallpaper cost in all 50 states + DC US average $5.00 per square foot installed · regional averages, full ranked table, and typical project totals.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
Find your wall area (perimeter × height), subtract windows and doors, add 15–20% for pattern matching, then divide by the usable coverage per roll — about 25 ft² for a single roll. A standard 12×12 room with 8 ft walls needs roughly 16 single rolls.
Why is usable coverage less than the roll size?
A roll’s printed area assumes zero waste, but you lose material to trimming top and bottom and to matching the pattern repeat at each seam. Using a usable-coverage figure (about 25 ft² for a single roll) keeps your estimate realistic.
Should I buy from the same batch?
Yes. Wallpaper color can vary slightly between print runs, so buy all your rolls from the same batch (lot) number at once, and order an extra roll for future repairs.
