How many gallons is a 16 x 32 foot pool?
A 16 by 32 rectangular pool sloping from 3 ft to 8 ft averages 5.5 ft deep, which is 2,816 cubic feet or about 21,065 gallons. The same footprint with a flat 4 ft bottom holds only about 15,300 gallons — a 27% difference from depth alone. That is why you should never look up a "typical" gallon figure by pool size. Measure your own depths, and if the pool was built to a plan, check the builder's spec sheet against your number before you trust either one.
Why does pool volume matter so much for chemicals?
Every dose on a label is per 10,000 gallons, so an error in volume is an identical error in every chemical you add all season. One gallon of 12.5% liquid chlorine raises free chlorine by roughly 10 ppm in 10,000 gallons, and about 1.5 lb of baking soda raises total alkalinity by roughly 10 ppm in the same volume. If you think you have 18,000 gallons and you actually have 21,000, you are dosing about 15% light every time, which shows up as chlorine that never quite holds and pH that keeps drifting.
What is the 8-hour turnover rule?
Turnover is the time it takes to pass the entire pool volume through the filter once. Residential practice is 8 to 10 hours; public pool codes are stricter and commonly require 6 hours or less. Divide gallons by 8, then by 60, to get the gallons per minute a pump has to sustain — about 44 gpm for a 21,000 gallon pool. Check that against your plumbing before buying a bigger pump: at the usual 6 ft/s suction and 8 ft/s return velocity limits, 1.5 in pipe tops out near 40–45 gpm, so oversizing the pump just adds noise and head loss.
Is the real volume lower than the math says?
Slightly, almost always. A vinyl liner pool has radius coves at the floor-to-wall joint and rounded corners, and any pool with a deep end has a sloped hopper whose walls angle inward rather than dropping straight down. Both remove water the rectangular formula assumes is there. Expect the true volume to run a few percent under the calculated figure — commonly 5–10% on a hopper-bottom pool with a long transition slope. Erring high is the safer direction for chemistry anyway, since you would rather underdose slightly and retest than overshoot.
How do I measure average depth on a sloped floor?
Averaging the two end depths is exact only when the floor slopes uniformly from wall to wall. Most pools do not: they have a flat shallow shelf, a transition slope, and a hopper. Mark a telescoping pole in feet, take depths at the shallow wall, at the slope break, mid-slope, and at the deep wall, and weight each by how much of the floor area it represents. A pool that is half flat at 3.5 ft and half sloping to 8 ft averages about 4.6 ft, not the 5.75 ft the two end readings suggest.
