How thick should the plywood or OSB be?
It depends on what the panel carries and how far apart the framing sits. Wall sheathing is typically 7/16" OSB or 15/32" plywood over studs at 16 or 24 inches on center. Roof decking is usually 7/16" to ½" over rafters or trusses at 24 inches, stepping up to ⅝" under heavy roofing or wider spans. Subfloor is thickest: 23/32" (nominal ¾") tongue-and-groove over joists at 16 inches. Every structural panel carries an APA span rating stamp — match that rating to your framing. Thickness, span rating, and the nailing schedule are code items, so treat this sheet count as a planning estimate only: your local building department and a licensed contractor or engineer have the final say on the panel spec for a structural application.
Is OSB or plywood cheaper?
OSB is almost always cheaper — commonly $5 to $15 less per 4×8 sheet at the same thickness — and it carries the same structural span ratings, which is why it dominates production framing. Plywood is lighter, a little stiffer underfoot, holds fasteners better at the edges, and dries out faster if it gets rained on during construction, so many builders still prefer it for subfloor and exposed work. Sheet prices for both swing hard with the lumber market, so price a sheet at your yard today rather than trusting last season’s number.
Why can’t I use every offcut?
Panel edges have to land on framing. When you cut a sheet around a window or at the end of a wall, the leftover strip usually will not reach two supports in the next run, so it becomes scrap even though the square footage still exists. Floor and roof layouts also require staggered end joints, which forces you to start alternate courses with a half sheet. That is what the waste allowance pays for; it is normal for a job to consume one or two more sheets than the raw square footage suggests.
How much waste should I add?
Five to ten percent covers a simple rectangle — a plain gable roof, a rectangular floor, a long straight wall. Ten to fifteen percent is realistic for a roof with hips, valleys, or dormers, or for walls broken up by lots of windows and doors. Push to fifteen or twenty percent on cut-up layouts, angled walls, and anything with many small planes. Round up to a whole sheet either way and buy the spare: returning one sheet is far easier than making a second lumber run mid-install.
How many sheets do I need for 1,000 square feet?
Divide by 32 square feet per 4×8 sheet: 1,000 ÷ 32 is 31.25, so 32 sheets bare and about 35 with a 10% waste allowance. Larger panels change the math — a 4×10 sheet covers 40 square feet, so the same area takes 25 sheets before waste. Bigger sheets mean fewer seams and less blocking, but they are harder to handle alone: a 4×8 sheet of 23/32" plywood already weighs around 60 pounds, and a 4×10 is proportionally heavier.
