Floor Joist Calculator
Count the joists for a floor or deck frame before you order lumber. Enter the length the joists run along, the span each joist crosses, and your on-center spacing to get the joist count, total linear feet of joist stock, rim joist footage, and a material cost. This tool counts pieces — it does not size them.

How it's calculated
No black boxes — here is the exact math behind your estimate, so you can check it or adapt it for your own quote.
- 1
Bays = ⌈ floor length × 12 ÷ spacing ⌉ (a partial last bay still counts) - 2
Joists = bays + 1 - 3
Total joist linear feet = joists × floor width (the span) - 4
Rim joist linear feet = 2 × floor length - 5
Cost = joists × price per joist + rim feet × (price per joist ÷ floor width)
Worked example
A 20 ft × 12 ft floor with joists spanning the 12 ft direction at 16 inches on center.
