What size floor joist do I need?
This calculator counts joists — it does not size them. Allowable span depends on lumber species and grade, joist depth, spacing, and the live and dead loads the floor carries, all published in the IRC floor joist span tables and whatever your jurisdiction has amended. As a feel for the numbers, No. 2 southern pine 2x10s at 16 inches on center land somewhere around 15 to 16 feet under a 40 psf residential live load. Treat that as a planning estimate only, and have the member size confirmed by your building department or a licensed engineer before you buy lumber.
Why is 16 inches on center the standard spacing?
Because 16 divides evenly into the 48-inch and 96-inch dimensions of sheet goods, so every subfloor panel edge lands on a joist and needs no extra blocking. It also keeps deflection comfortable under a 40 psf residential live load. 24 inches on center saves lumber but usually demands a thicker subfloor — ¾-inch tongue-and-groove minimum — and feels bouncier underfoot. 12 inches on center shows up under tile floors and heavy loads. 19.2 inches is the odd one out: it puts exactly five joists under an 8-foot sheet.
How does the joist count work?
Joists are counted along the wall they run parallel to. Divide that length by the spacing to get the number of bays, round up, then add one, because a final joist is needed to close the last bay. A 20-foot wall at 16 inches on center gives 240 ÷ 16 = 15 bays and therefore 16 joists. The rounding up matters when the length is not a clean multiple: a 20½-foot wall is 15.4 bays, which becomes 16 bays and 17 joists, because that short leftover bay still needs a joist on both sides. Rim or band joists are counted separately — two runs the full length of the floor. If a partition wall, stair opening, or chimney interrupts the field, add doubled joists and headers on top of this count.
Do I need blocking or bridging between joists?
Usually yes. Code requires lateral restraint at the joist ends, and solid blocking or cross-bridging at mid-span once joists are deeper than a nominal 2x12. Even where it is not strictly required, a row of solid blocking at mid-span noticeably stiffens a bouncy floor and is cheap: roughly one block per bay, so a 16-joist floor takes 15 blocks cut from the same stock. Blocking is not included in the counts above — add it, plus hangers, when you write the lumber list.
Is the cost estimate realistic?
It prices the field joists at whatever figure you enter, plus rim stock priced per foot from that same rate, so it is a material-only number for the joists themselves. Lumber prices move fast, so check the current shelf price rather than trusting the default. Not included: joist hangers and hanger nails, beams, posts, footings, subfloor sheathing, construction adhesive, blocking, and labor. Framing labor commonly matches or exceeds the lumber cost, so budget at least double this figure for an installed floor.
