How many BTU do I need to cool a room?
A common rule of thumb is 20 BTU per square foot. A 300-square-foot room therefore needs about 6,000 BTU. Adjust up for very sunny rooms, high ceilings, kitchens, or rooms with several people, and down for heavily shaded spaces.
How many square feet does 12,000 BTU cool?
At 20 BTU per square foot, a 12,000 BTU unit (one ton) cools roughly 550–600 square feet under average conditions. Insulation quality, climate, sun exposure, and ceiling height all shift that number.
Is it bad to oversize an air conditioner?
Yes. An oversized AC cools the air quickly but short-cycles before it removes humidity, leaving the room cold and clammy and wearing out the compressor. Sizing close to the calculated load gives steadier temperatures and better dehumidification.
